This Side of Home by Renee Watson

This book is beautifully written and does a fine job of exploring identity and home. It can get a little heavy handed with the message and the too perfect resolution.

Here’s an example of the writing that shows how very skilled Renee Watson is:  “Essence’s life is like a blues song.  Her mother, a scratched record stuck on the same note.”
