Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman

This was a hard book to read.  It was so realistic and sad and so confusing all at once.  Caden’s struggle to stay connected to reality was heart breaking.  The drawing add a great deal to the story.  Consider reading the author’s note at the end before you begin the book.  I read it when I was halfway through, and it added much to my understanding.
