The Impossible Knife of Memory by Laurie Halse Anderson

Anderson is at her best when she is describing high schools.  In this book the school budget has been slashed so much that lunch is first period and the phys ed classes are staffed by bored parent volunteers with whistles.

Hayley and her dad have lived on the road for years.  Now that he has decided to settle in one place Hayley learns how difficult it is to protect him from his demons.  His PTSD symptoms increase and he becomes a danger to himself and to Hayley.  She tries to find a way to keep him safe while navigating a high school that simply does not respond to her needs.

Another excellent title from a skilled YA author.
