The Boy in the Black Suit by Jason Reynolds

Matt is doing well, against all odds. His mother has died, his father retreats into alcohol and other poor choices. Left on his own, Matt makes the best possible choices and surrounds himself with the people who expect him to succeed and do what they can to help. Working for a funeral home gives him access to the grief of strangers, and in this grief he finds solidarity with the mourners. A sweet story told with authentic dialogue and a fine sense of setting. It’s kind of a relief to see a character make good choices – no hitting rock bottom here.
