Gracefully Grayson by Ami Polonsky

How much did I love this book? I read it straight through in a single afternoon. (That’s what rainy days are for, right?) I’m so impressed by this debut novel.

Grayson is trapped in the wrong skin. He looks in the mirror and feels wrong. He gets dressed everyday in the wrong clothes and wears the wrong hairstyle. Far from the typical teen angst we see in so many books, Grayson is truly trapped. As a 6th grader he does not have the vocabulary to declare himself transgender, but author Ami Polonsky does a fine job of a helping the reader to understand Grayson’s troubles. The school play is a perfect plot device. Grayson is cast as Persephone, daughter of Demeter; trapped with Hades for half of her life. As his secret self becomes stronger Grayson finds both the best people and the worst.
